Latest edition gets back to basics: defining our community
Within the rolling expanse of Southeast Ohio, the county of Athens boasts breathtaking landscapes and a diverse range of characters. From sustainable farmland to environmental degradation, rich cultural centers to impoverished rural villages, and folk to funk, Soul of Athens illuminates the distinct features that compose Athens’ soul.
Soul of Athens is an innovative online publication that studies the contrasts of this Appalachian county through a collection of timeless stories and multimedia presentations. The project gives voice to a diverse group of individuals intertwined by a common sense of place through stories that resonate universally. Produced by students at Ohio University’s School of Visual Communication and E.W. Scripps School of Journalism, the award-winning Soul of Athens has been placed in the same competitive arena as National Geographic, The New York Times and The Los Angeles Times.
While the 2008 edition set a mission to illustrate the pursuit of wellness in Athens County, this third edition of Soul of Athens goes back to the roots of its first launch in 2007 by asking the question: What is the soul of Athens?
